Library of Congress
During the second week in September, WIP interns were encouraged to visit the Library of Congress to see an exhibit (that will be there until January 6, 2007) titled “Maps in Our Lives” that features maps of George Washington's farm made between 1760 and 1999, among forty items from the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping's annual map-design competition. Until January 20, another special exhibit at the Library of Congress is entitled “Enduring Outrage: Editorial Cartoons by Herblock,” which showcases cartoons by Herbert Block. “American Treasures of the Library of Congress” contains a rotating selection of more than 240 objects, including rare books, photographs, and audio samples. “Bob Hope and American Variety” is an exhibit exploring the career of this comedian through photographs, videos, and artifacts. “By Securing to Authors: Copyright, Commerce, and Creativity in America” displays rotating examples of continually copyrighted items. In the permanent exhibit, interns were told to look for “Here to Stay” featuring sound recordings, sheet music, and artifacts from the Gershwin Collection. Also of interest was “The Gerry Mulligan Collection” exhibit, which examines the life and career of the late jazz composer and performer through musical scores, sound recordings, and a baritone saxophone.
