On Wednesday, February 22, WIP students went to the U.S. Institute of Peace for a seminar dealing with Haiti’s Future. Following the February 7th elections, Haiti reached a crossroads. The country had repeatedly defied foreign attempts to impose solutions on its myriad problems out of the conviction that only Haitians are capable of instituting sustainable results. Among the questions addressed was whether Haiti can find effective leaders who will receive international support. Speakers included Ambassador Roger Noriega, a visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute; former Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs John Maisto, who is also a U.S. ambassador at the Organization of American States; Mark Schneider, senior vice president of the International Crisis Group; Johanna Mendelson Forman, director of Peace, Security, and Human Rights at the U.N. Foundation; and Senator Malcolm Wallop, who served as moderator.
