Borders Books, Andrew Sullivan on The Conservative Soul: How We Lost It, How to Get It Back
Located on K Street, N.W., Borders Books featured Andrew Sullivan, who spoke on his new book and signed copies of The Conservative Soul: How We Lost It, How to Get It Back,on Thursday evening October 19 -- the same night on which other WIP interns went to Olssons Books and Records to hear David Kuo give an alternate analysis of Christian fundamentalism and political power.Andrew Sullivan argued that conservatives are facing an internal crisis because Republicans traditionally favor limited government, balanced budgets, and the rule of law, but under President Bush conservative leaders sharply increased government spending and debt, intruded federally into marriage law and medical questions about the beginning and end of life, and centralized power in the executive branch. Sullivan claimed that some conservatives experienced a crisis of conscience with regard to supporting a party that defines its God-given mission as the need to change people’s souls instead of protecting their liberty. WIP interns chose between the two book stores and the respective authors (Sullivan or Kuo). Many students were excited to attend the launch of this controversial book in a city where such ideas evoke strong reactions on both sides.
